First-Time Actress Yalitza Aparicio on How She Found ‘Roma’

A breakout star in “Roma,” first-time actress Yalitza Aparicio went from small-town schoolteacher-in-training to snagging a lead role in director Alfonso Cuarón’s autobiographical movie about his formative years in Mexico. Aparicio plays Cleo, based on the director’s childhood nanny. “It’s kind of incredible that I’ve had this experience,” she says, “because not everybody starts this […].....»»

Yalitza Aparicio Poses at the Mexico Border For "W" Magazine

Yalitza Aparicio poses for a shoot conceptualized by Roma director Alfonso Cuaron for one of the covers of W magazine’s Volume 2: Director’s Cut issues. Here’s what the 25-year-old actress and the director had to share with the mag: Alfonso on the impact of Yalitza’s Academy Award nomination for best actress: “We create a division every day with the people around us, and Yalitza comes from a place that is easy to put aside and forget. In Mexico and elsewhere, people who look like Yalitza are immediately classified and deemed unworthy. Being acknowledged by the Academy has a big impact. It’s another wall. And hopefully that wall has started to fall.” Alfonso on why he staged the shoot at the Mexico border: “The wall turns people into enemies for no reason. Walls are pointless. Whether there is a physical structure there or not, I’m more concerned with the invisible wall that divides social classes and backgrounds. That’s a barrier we accept every day, without thinking.” Yalitza on her role as a representative of indigenous people: “I went to school to be a teacher. And Roma can educate people. It can help break the stereotype that skin color determines your destiny.” For more from Yalitza and Alfonso, visit WMagazine.com......»»

Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma and Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite lead nominations announced today for the 91st Academy Awards, scoring 10 nods each, including for best picture. With Roma, Netflix has scored its first best-picture nomination, something the streaming giant had dearly sought. The Best Picture category has eight nominees for 2019. Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book, two movies that have been the subject of controversy and were previously honored with Best Picture trophies at the Golden Globes, are both nominated, as is last year’s biggest Hollywood success story: Black Panther. The big snubs: Bradley Cooper was nominated for best actor for A Star Is Born, but missed out on a nomination for best director. Another best director snub for Ryan Coogler for Black Panther. Ethan Hawke seemed like a shoo-in for his critically lauded work in First Reformed. This one is truly shocking, the Fred Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? was a heavy favorite to win best documentary. That won’t happen now that it has not been nominated. If Beale Street Could Talk did not make the best picture cut, nor did director Barry Jenkins in the best director category. The big surprises: Spike Lee earned his first best director nod. Ever. This year he’s nominated for BlacKkKlansman. Black Panther made history being the first superhero film to be nominated for best picture. Willem Dafoe was nominated for best actor in the little-seen At Eternity’s Gate for his role as Vincent Van Gogh. Here is the full list of 2019 Oscar Nominations: Best Picture Black Panther BlacKkKlansman Bohemian Rhapsody The Favourite Green Book Roma A Star Is Born Vice Best Actress Yalitza Aparicio, Roma Glenn Close, The Wife Olivia Colman, The Favourite Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me? Yalitza Aparicio Didn"t Know the Language She Spoke in "Roma" Before Filming

Here’s what the 25-year-old Roma actress had to share with the mag: On not seeing people like herself in film growing up: “I never got to see people who looked like me or like any other people that I grew up with. That, over time, made me lose interest in cinema and to really focus on things that I considered to be more like reality because everything that I saw in film just seemed completely like fiction.” On the hardest part of filming Roma: “There were many things. One of them was just being surrounded by cameras and trying to forget and not get so nervous, to be able to just act and do the things that were being asked of me. Something that I always forget to say in interviews is that I actually had to learn Mixteco. I don’t actually speak Mixteco. The person who taught Mixteco to me is Nancy [García], who plays Adela in the film. Because we didn’t have a script, we had to practice right before the shoot every day in how to pronounce it and how to get it right.” On her sudden rise to stardom: “It has been overwhelming. A lot of actors who have a lot more experience than me come up to me and tell me that in fact my experience is a really overwhelming experience, that everything that’s happening is really big. I’m very aware of the fact that this might not happen again, so what I really try to do is ground myself in appreciating every moment and taking full advantage of what I can learn from every single moment I’m living through.” For more from Yalitza, visit TeenVogue.com......»»
