Disabled Groups Slam Casting of Joaquin Phoenix as Paraplegic

There are a thousand things wrong with this world, and a thousand fixes, half of them maybe make sense. The other half are ludicrous. Befriend people who can discern the difference between smart and dumb solutions and you won’t find yourself on the embarrassing end of a protest march or sit-in. Gus Van Sant has a new movie coming out. Which means it’s a great day in acting town for young twink boys. Van Sant chose to put Joaquin Phoenix in the bio pic lead role of controversial cartoonist, John Callahan, a car-crash injured paraplegic bound to a wheelchair. The Ruderman Family Foundation for promoting disability inclusion particularly tore into the filmmaker and producers: “It was a mistake for director Gus Van Sant to cast Joaquin Phoenix in his upcoming biopic about disabled cartoonist John Callahan. The time has come for the entertainment industry to audition and cast actors with disabilities to play leading roles portraying disability. As we enter 2018, American society no longer finds it acceptable for white actors to play black, Asian or Hispanic characters. It is equally unacceptable and offensive for able-bodied actors to be cast inauthentically in the roles of characters with disabilities.” The Foundation claims that the Phoenix casting is both offensive and a missed opportunity to cast a disabled actor. Though they didn’t say which element angered them more. They do make a point. Because casting is no longer about finding the right actor, but hitting the appropriate demographic boxes, why not hit the affirmative action button on casting a disabled person? The art of acting, such that you may suggest that exists, inherently accepts that actors are playing roles, not themselves. For instance, my career peaked in fourth grade when I portrayed a tree on stage. Prior to that, I was a parked car. Acting range aside, the conceit is that theatrical dramatizations are not the same as real life. Van Sant probably doesn’t give a shit what level of disability his lead actor has, he merely wants talent, and perhaps a name big enough to get some production cash. You can’t name a wheelchair bound actor, which makes the latter funding point fairly germane. It is reasonable to accept that a paraplegic actor might bring something to the role of a wheelchair bound guy, but the character in the movie loses use of his legs at 21. What if the wheelchair bound actor didn’t experience anything similar. Is it possible Phoenix could wrap his head around losing use of his legs more so than a guy who has never walked could portray a former ambulatory person. And how would you even film those scenes, at least on a Van Sant film budget? Theoretically, it would be nice if there were casting for people who otherwise had trouble finding gigs. It’s acting, not skyscraper welding. Pretty much anybody with a desire to get attention and a hint of hatred toward their father can emote for a camera. There’s no reason why an Asian guy, a disabled guy, or Hmong woman can’t portray roles as well as the angry #MeToo perfect features yoga set of Brentwood. Though none of those people will be in a Gus Van Sant movie either. Too much underaged nipple. Actresses Accuse CSI Casting Veteran Of Manipulating Aspiring Stars Into Undressing

Another day, another sexual misconduct scandal… On Wednesday, veteran casting associate Andy Henry was exposed by The Hollywood Reporter for manipulating actresses into disrobing during private, paid auditioning sessions. On Wednesday, veteran casting associate Andy Henry was exposed by The Hollywood Reporter for manipulating actresses into disrobing during private, paid auditioning sessions. In fact, this behavior got Henry fired from his CSI casting gig and his own firm in 2008, as it was revealed that he used this strategy on up-and-comers seeking costarring roles on the crime drama. Related: Tom Sizemore Dropped From Horror Movie Project Sadly, some women fell for Andy's "coaching technique," as they felt compelled to please him since he was a key way to land entry-level parts. Man, oh man. To make matters worse, since the firing was never publicly disclosed, Henry went on to work on MAJOR motion pictures -- including Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, The Descendants, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Elysium. Tsk, tsk. Thankfully, five women have made the brave decision to come forward to detail their unsavory experiences with Andy. These women became connected thanks to the #MeToo campaign. Understandably, the actresses feel they were preyed upon. And it seems as though Andy thoroughly planned out his manipulation as the ladies' respective encounters with Henry were practically identical. Per the accusers, Henry used the same scene from a 2006 episode of the procedural, where a character struggles with a rare genetic disorder that causes excess hair growth. On meeting the casting professional at Reel Pros, actress Jenny Kern recalled: "His line was, 'It's a really challenging scene and I can tell you can handle it, but it definitely requires more work than what we do here. Do you have any time to stay afterward to push a little harder with [the material]?' I was really flattered." Andy had Jenny perform the scene a few times before suggesting that, in order to achieve "more vulnerability," she should take her bra off. According to Kern, the industry vet became dissatisfied with the situation and "incrementally asked [her] to take [her] clothes off." Jenny eventually complied so that she could get the meeting over with. After manipulating Jenny into her underwear, Andy began to improvise a scene that was highly inappropriate. She continued: "He started saying things, improvising as this detective character: 'I can see your tits,' 'I can see you shave your pussy.' He did it until I finally cried." He ended the meeting by thanking Jenny for her performance. How awful. Tessa Goss had a similar run-in with Andy while at Culver City's acting center ITA. She added: "He prefaced by saying, as he'd playact frustration, running his hands through his hair, 'This is going to seem super-crazy, but don't think it's super-weird.' That he works with actresses all the time. His thing was that [the performance] would feel more authentic if you can feel your nipples against your clothes. I thought, 'I need to get out of here.' But there's also this sick actor part of me that thought, 'I need to get out of here as friends.'" Tessa chose to leave the meeting, as she was pregnant with her third child and not eager to show her baby bump to a stranger. Goss later emailed ITA about Andy's behavior and later received the following reply: "Dear God! Just tell me that no one asked you to disrobe!!!" SMH. Andy's advances left quite the impact on his victims as many began to doubt their talent following the upsetting invitations. Catherine Black, who rebuffed Henry's request at AIA Actor's Studio, shared: "It really planted a seed in my head, that maybe I wasn't good enough. Of, what did I do wrong? It made me feel ashamed." Through AIA, Andy met another victim, whom he allegedly groped. Mandy June Turpin, who claims Henry touched her shoulders and breasts during their session, relayed: "I thought, 'Thank God, somebody said something.' You're afraid to speak up. You're someone without credits. And he went on to work again in the business anyway." Andy also preyed on an intern at the casting firm where he worked, named Ulrich/Dawson/Kritzer. Reportedly, Henry offered to give aspiring star Jacqueline Mueller private acting advice back in 2008. Using the same CSI scene, the casting expert advised the intern to take off her bra, a request she followed. When Andy told her to unzip her sweater, Mueller realized the situation had become one of misconduct. Related: Sixth Woman Accuses Roy Moore Of Sexual Assault Jacqueline remembered: "Then he asked me to unzip my sweater. If I'd unzipped it, I would've been topless. I felt disgusted and bamboozled." In order to "loosen" her up, Andy then offered Mueller a glass of whiskey. She quipped: "I don't remember him reaching out to the men in the office to 'help' them." Ugh. Andy has since responded to the allegations with the following statement: "Nine years ago, I tried what I thought was a coaching technique, but which I learned very quickly was foolish and foolhardy. It was brought to light almost immediately, and as you were correctly informed, I was terminated from my employment in 2008 as a result. I was then, and remain to this day, profoundly sorry about these incidents. I took responsibility right away for using nudity as a technique to explore the vulnerability portrayed in a scene, without being cognizant of the potential damage to the human being in the room. I was not aware of the allegations of fondling until now, and do not believe or recall that such a thing happened. I never meant to make anyone feel pressured into doing anything, nor did I ever consciously intend to hurt anyone. My job was gone, my standing in the entertainment community was greatly lowered, and my career options were severely curtailed. I lost my marriage and declared bankruptcy as a result. I was punished for my actions, but I have spent the last nine years rebuilding myself into a person who could never do such a thoughtless and careless thing again. I have formally converted to Judaism, I have dedicated my life to the service of God and to trying to make some repair in this world. And I have striven to live and work every day as honorably and as honestly as possible. I am, again, inexpressibly sorry for the pain that these incidents caused." Looks like someone is REALLY trying to downplay this controversy. Is there a way to fast track his ousting??? [Image via YouTube.].....»»

According to TMZ, a warrant has been issued to collect the DNA of the Atomic Blonde producer in connection to claims made by actress Jessica Barth that he drugged and raped her in 2012. As we reported, the Ted star claimed she went to dinner with Guillod -- who has since been accused of sexual assault by three other women -- and a friend, drank a lot of wine, and woke up at her home with "six hickeys" on her neck. Related: Nelly Under Criminal Investigation For Alleged Sexual Assault In the investigation docs, officials add that Barth went to the hospital for a rape kit and the exam revealed bruises on her thigh and forehead, along with potential saliva on her breast and neck. Barth said she asked Guillod if they had sex and he said no, but admitted they did have a makeout session. The initial allegations were investigated and the case was closed in 2014 -- but after "new allegations" surfaced, the LAPD decided to re-open the investigation. Related: Reese Witherspoon Says Women Were Swapping #MeToo Stories For DECADES After Barth's accusations went public in November, Guillod stepped down as co-CEO of Primary Wave Entertainment. Shortly following his resignation, three more women came forward with similar allegations of being drugged and raped. A big misfire in the original investigation, officials noted, was that they never collected a DNA sample from Guillod, so they are looking to do that now. Time certainly seems to be up for Guillod, who is also reportedly under investigation by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office for allegedly raping a former employee in 2014. Angelina Jolie Fires Back at "Vanity Fair," Disputes "First They Killed My Father" Audition Story

The director would pretend to catch the child, and the child would have to come up with a lie,” the Vanity Fair story reads. Many are calling this account of the casting emotionally abusive. Angelina released a statement to the Huffington Post assuring everyone that the story is taken out of context and there were guardians, parents, doctors, and more present during the entire filming process. “Every measure was taken to ensure the safety, comfort and well-being of the children on the film starting from the auditions through production to the present,” Angelina said. “I am upset that a pretend exercise in an improvisation, from an actual scene in the film, has been written about as if it was a real scenario. "That"s Going Too Far!" Liam Neeson Says The Gender Pay Gap Is "Disgraceful" — But Would NOT Take A Pay Cut Himself!

Liam Neeson is down for the cause — as long as it doesn't hurt his paycheck. On Thursday, The Commuter star sat down with The Associated Press and discussed Hollywood's gender pay gap problem. On Thursday, The Commuter star sat down with The Associated Press and discussed Hollywood's gender pay gap problem. This particular topic has been thrust back into the spotlight following the revelations that Michelle Williams got less than one percent of what costar Mark Wahlberg earned for reshoots for All the Money in the World. Related: Is Michelle Williams ENGAGED?? Although this controversy didn't affect Liam personally, he weighed in on the conversation by noting: "There's a lot of discussion about it and a lot of healthy and necessary discussion about it because the disparity sometimes is fucking disgraceful... We're starting and it's starting with these extraordinary actresses and brave ladies and we as men have got to be part of it. We started it, so we have to be part of the solution." Well said. However, Neeson seemed less on board with the cause after the interview asked if he'd be willing to take a pay cut to, you know, even things out. He expressed: "Pay cut? No, no, no, no, no. That's going too far. There has to be parity; there just has to be." Watch the whole thing (below)! THE EQUALIZER: #LiamNeeson on the "disgraceful" pay gap between men and women. Contains swearing. pic.twitter.com/wT3l1LJf8M — AP Entertainment (@APEntertainment) January 11, 2018 Tsk, tsk. While we're glad to see that he's an ally of a righteous cause, we just wish he'd be willing to do more to bring about change. Though like Liam we suppose we WOULD rather see women get a pay raise! What do YOU think?? Should actors be willing to take a pay cut for parity?? [Image via WENN.].....»»

Catt Sadler Left E! News Over Pay Disparity with Jason Kennedy

Catt Sadler is opening up in a new statement to explain why she decided to leave her gig as the co-host of E! News. News. The TV personality says she left the show over a “massive disparity in pay between my similarly situated male co-host” Jason Kennedy and herself. “An executive from E brought something alarming to my attention — namely, that there was a massive disparity in pay between my similarly situated male co-host and myself. More recently, when E reached out to renew and extend my deal, I learned that he wasn’t just making a little more than I was. In fact, he was making close to double my salary for the past several years,” Catt said in a statement on her website. “Information is power. Or it should be. We are living in a new era. The gender pay gap is shrinking, although admittedly we have a long way to go. And well, I learned this first hand. My team and I asked for what I know I deserve and were denied repeatedly,” she added. “Know your worth. I have two decades experience in broadcasting and started at the network the very same year as my close friend and colleague that I adore. I so lovingly refer to him as my ‘tv husband’ and I mean it,” Catt said. “But how can I operate with integrity and stay on at E if they’re not willing to pay me the same as him? Or at least come close? How can I accept an offer that shows they do not value my contributions and paralleled dedication all these years? How can I not echo the actions of my heroes and stand for what is right no matter what the cost? How can I remain silent when my rights under the law have been violated?” Catt‘s final episode of E! News was tonight (December 19). Click inside to read the full statement… Catt Sadler’s Full Statement I know first hand that dreams do come true. For the past twelve years, I’ve been living mine out loud as one of the hosts on E television. For more than a decade I’ve walked through the doors at E and traveled into people’s living rooms around the world. I’ve reported from a royal wedding, the Olympics, and the Oscars. I’ve been to film festivals in France, movie premieres in Rio, and fashion week in Paris. I’ve gotten chased by the paparazzi on camera while shopping with Kris Jenner, co-hosted shows with Khloe, Kim and Kourtney, and interviewed Kendall and Kylie back in those early Keeping Up days when no one could remember their names. It has been unpredictable, intoxicating, rewarding and hard work. Five days a week since February 2006. First, for The Daily 10 and later for E News. Then, this year happened. Daily Pop was born. I was named host which meant double duty. Hosting a live, two-hour daytime show while also hosting E News most nights. It was creatively challenging but genuinely one of the most fulfilling years of my professional career. Coincidentally, around this same time an executive from E brought something alarming to my attention — namely, that there was a massive disparity in pay between my similarly situated male co-host and myself. More recently, when E reached out to renew and extend my deal, I learned that he wasn’t just making a little more than I was. In fact, he was making close to double my salary for the past several years. Information is power. Or it should be. We are living in a new era. The gender pay gap is shrinking, although admittedly we have a long way to go. And well, I learned this first hand. My team and I asked for what I know I deserve and were denied repeatedly. Know your worth. I have two decades experience in broadcasting and started at the network the very same year as my close friend and colleague that I adore. I so lovingly refer to him as my “tv husband” and I mean it. But how can I operate with integrity and stay on at E if they’re not willing to pay me the same as him? Or at least come close? How can I accept an offer that shows they do not value my contributions and paralleled dedication all these years? How can I not echo the actions of my heroes and stand for what is right no matter what the cost? How can I remain silent when my rights under the law have been violated? It’s scary. I am a single mother of two boys. The unknown can be terrifying, but it can also be the most beautiful gift. Countless brave women have come forward this year to speak their truth. Females refuse to remain silent on issues that matter most because without our voices, how will we invoke lasting change? How can we make it better for the next generation of girls if we do not stand for what is fair and just today? It was my desire to stay at my job. To continue entertaining our loyal viewers around the world. To keep working alongside some of the best writers, directors, and producers in the game. Everyone from the studio crew, hair and makeup artists, to the security at the front door are true friends of mine. They have been my work family and I love them dearly. Unfortunately, however, my decision was made for me and I must go. I will find more work. I will create content with meaning. I will continue to pursue my passions while making my children proud. The way I see it, I have an obligation to be an agent for change. It was important for me to explain my departure. I did not want to disappear from your television screens and have you wonder why. Thank you for your precious time all these years. Thank you for the support. Thank you for the constant exchange of ideas on social media as well. This chapter is over and a new one begins. Big big love, Catt.....»»
